Abstract

A Roman gold mining district where hydraulic techniques were used to exploit placer gold was recently discovered on the Karth, a wooded plateau in the foothills of the Eastern Alps about 80km to the south of Vienna. The archaeological features, such as the course of several leats, various water tanks and related opencasts are extraordinarily well preserved. Examples of the numerous wood working, smithing and mining tools that have been found in the mining district are presented. The article gives an overview of the first field survey and aims to introduce this exciting site to a wide audience.
